ASPD:
The End of the Fucking World (show)
The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window And Disappeared (book) **
Hitman Anders and the Meaning of it All (book)
I Care A Lot (movie) **
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest (movie)
NPD:
The Politician (show) **
The Morning Show (show) **
The Devil Wears Prada (movie)
Believe it or not, Mary Poppins fits too, she exhibits traits of NPD consistently throughout both the new movie and the old one… ummm tbh I’m having a hard time not just recommending everything with characters i kin in them.
The overlap between my NPD and ASPD makes it kinda hard for me to decide which category other characters and their films/shows/books fit into, like Kuzco from the Emperors New Groove, and Scarlett Overkill in the Minions movie, also some characters in AHS too, uhhh… Regina Mills in Once Upon a Time definitely has some type of personality disorder, but I’m not really sure I’d choose ASPD or NPD, I’d have to rewatch the series to be sure. Mother Gothel in Tangled definitely has NPD, plus I know it’s cliche at this point, but NBC Hannibal and BBC Sherlock, while not being great examples of shows with ASPD characters, do technically have them.. although I hesitate with Hannibal tbh, since it’s all so over dramatized he’s basically a super villain :/. In the case of Sherlock, however, the only character I really feel is a well written example of someone with ASPD (even tho I think it was unintentional) is Mycroft Holmes. Sherlock is the one with diagnosed (not sure if it’s self dx or pro dx) aspd, but I truly feel like Mycroft is better written as a character with the disorder than Sherlock is.
sorry, I know this is a long addition! I put two asterisks (**) next to the ones I think have really good portrayals of ASPD/NPD :)
Hope this is okay. I want to better understand npd and aspd. To avoid the stereotypes, could you recommend movies or even books about it?
Thanks and have a good day
Reading books and watching movies is all well and good. but you should take in consideration that fiction is very much influenced by stereotypes, and the characters symptoms are overdramatised for our entertainment. So tbh, I’d suggest you follow blogs, read and watch content by antisocials and narcissists. Preferably not mine because I run this blog for myself only (be the same for a lot of us here).
TLDR; at the top of my head I’d recommend House, Killing Eve, Thoroughbreds, for aspd. and, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Halston (he def had npd) for npd. Sadly I can’t recommend many books because I mainly read non fiction.
If anyone else can list more movies/ books, post them in the comments ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#If I spent longer thinking about it I could probably come up with half a dozen more#but I’m tired and frankly this is more than enough#also op killing eve is a very good example and I would have added it in a heart beat if u hadn’t already <3 fantastic#anyways anyone who wants to fight about some of these is wrong#yes I said Mary poppins. no I’m not backing down. she really REALLY exhibits NPD traits. and tbh I love her for it#she’s not just vain; she literally can’t stop herself from looking at her own reflection whenever possible. she is Always Right.#she is Practically Perfect in Every Way. she gets upset when people (Bert) don’t seem to consider her the Cream of the Crop.#idk she just really really screams NPD to me. once again I could be projecting onto her since she is one of my kins. but even so#I’m still right about her.#also in the case of Regina Mills - from what I remember she’s got a lot of the symptoms of aspd. plus she did suffer a ton of trauma#so it makes sense. but like I said I’d have to rewatch the show to know for sure.#plus just in case whoever’s reading this post read all the way down my tags: both books I mentioned are by the same author#his name is Jonas Jonasson and he’s one of the best writers ever. he’s Swedish so all of his work is translated into English but srsly.#he’s amazing and I highly recommend any and all of his work; not just the two I mention above.#aspd#npd#actually aspd#actually npd#book recs#movie recs#show recs#aspd book movie and show recs
